Our Mission
At The Traveling Tiles, we love sharing the joy of mahjong and building community along the way. We travel from pub to pub across Northern Virginia, from Fairfax to Arlington and spots in between, most Wednesdays, with the occasional Tuesday or Thursday mixed in.
Whether you are brand new to the game or a seasoned player, you are welcome at our table. We just ask that you:
• Bring kindness and patience for learning
• Support the local business with a drink and/or bite to eat
• Come ready to connect, have fun, and maybe make a few new friends
About Us
Elaine and Stefani fell in love with mahjong the moment they heard the clink of the tiles, felt the possibility in every hand, and discovered the rich history behind the game.
Almost immediately, we realized mahjong was about so much more than tiles and strategy. It was a way to make new friends, share a lot of laughter, and spend time in the local places that help make a community feel like home.
We created The Traveling Tiles to offer the same kind of welcoming experience we were lucky to have when we learned: cozy, curious, warm, and full of grace for mistakes. This is a place where you can laugh at a wild discard, celebrate a win, shrug off a loss, and feel comfortable from your very first hand.
Our goal is simple: build community first and share the joy of mahjong along the way. We welcome new and seasoned players, make learning approachable, and gather in small local businesses we love to support.
Pull up a chair, shuffle the tiles, and come play with us. We cannot wait to meet you.
Where We Play
We try to play every Wednesday night. Because many local spots host trivia nights or live music midweek, it sometimes takes a little creativity to find the right fit: a place that feels warm and welcoming, but is still quiet enough for conversation, teaching, and relaxed play.
With deep roots in the local brew-pub scene, our hearts naturally start there. We often gather in cozy breweries and neighborhood spots that share our love of community.
From time to time, holidays or scheduling conflicts mean we shift to a Tuesday or Thursday, but the spirit stays the same: a friendly table, good company, and a space where everyone can learn, laugh, and feel at home.
As more new players have become curious to learn and bring a friend, we have added an every-other-Thursday game night just for beginners and newer players.
